Christmas in Quito

We arrived in Quito on October 7th, getting back to our activities here. I (Delicia) started going to Jardines del Inca neighborhood to work together with Alba Silva in the after school program. When we were in the States I mentioned that we are using the neighborhood Casa Communal, but that we have a shipping container that needs fixed up that a friend of the church is letting us use. In October we painted the container, together with youth from church and also Alba’s family.

We wanted to move the classes to the container right away, but it is not suitable yet since it is too hot.  To be able to make it more comfortable for the neighborhood students we want to put insolation in the ceiling and something on the walls as.  We made colada morada, a traditional drink of purple corn and fruit, to sell to fundraise to finish adapting the shipping container.  We are hopeful that we will have a nice and comfortable space for the kids to work in.

Colada morada is a traditional drink that is made in Ecuador for el Día de Difuntos, day of the dead.  In Ecuador it is always prepared and shared together with guaguas de pan, little breads in the shape of babies. We took some colada and guaguas for the children to decorate in the after school program.

Now that we are getting close to Christmas here in Quito there is the custom to give children a bag of sweets. Together with other people from church, we went to get a bunch of sweets and after that we also put them in bags to give to the children that participate in the different programs the church has. Just seeing all of the candies I am already stuffed.

Christmas is one of my favorites seasons of the year, as a family we enjoy doing different activities together focusing on Christmas and its true meaning, the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Isaias 9:6

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

There is also this great song from Santiago Benavides that our girls like to listen to this time of year. https://youtu.be/JL9bqJlMKNc?si=uMuqXQS_KcRq9O5P
